Whether you like it or loathe it, science is part of our daily lives. From the air we breathe to the grass we walk on, everything has a scientific explanation to it, whether we know it or not. This is what drove Jessie Rose, our Didik-Kasih EduCare Program recipient to conduct Science Wizards, an event that exposed children to the fun side of science.
The project, a collaboration between Great Vision Charity Association (GVCA) and Pusat Jagaan Kasih Harmoni saw 35 children from the ages of 4-12 learn about scientific concepts like density by creating lava lamps with simple household products that are easily available.
However, the event also fully acknowledged those who were a little more artsy than the rest as there was also an art and craft session where kids learnt how to make a wau bulan, or a traditional kite. This not only ensured that all children got to participate and enjoy the event, but also displayed the importance of developing both sides of the brain.
Along with GVCA’s seven volunteers and staff from Pusat Jagaan Kasih Harmoni, the kids were able to go through a fun-filled day which stimulated both their mind and body, as they did puzzles and aerobic exercises too.
Jessie, who planned the event extensively, was sure to make the event an immersive one by briefing all volunteers to make sure that the kids felt like scientists on that day, and referring to them as wizards too.
“As the kids were separated into groups, the volunteers who acted as team leaders for the day were able to handle the kids’ excitement while also staying energised for all the activities throughout the day,” said Jessie, who made sure that both volunteers and children could enjoy themselves without burning out.
Her efforts were certainly not in vain. “The science activity we did today was unlike anything we’ve done in school. We are so excited and happy to get to do this!” said a child from Pusat Jagaan Kasih Harmoni.
Indeed, the same excitement resounded not only with most of the kids, but the volunteers who participated in the event as well. “The project was a good one to introduce science to children! In the future maybe a secondary school project can be run as well,” said Hidayah, a volunteer.
The Didik-Kasih EduCare Program which Jessie is under enables her and other recipients to run projects like this in order to learn the importance of giving back to the community. Jessie, who was awarded one-off aid for her tertiary studies as well as a monthly allowance for academic use, is one of the many who not only benefit from this program by GVCA, but also help others through it.
Jessie’s GVCA mentors, who were present at the event, welcome new applicants to the program for 2020. To learn more and to apply, click here or drop us an email at [email protected]. We can’t wait to hear from you!
