MALAY ORPHANS EXPERIENCE CHINESE ARTS AND PERFORMANCE

BANDAR SUNWAY, 3 February 2016: In the spirit of muhibah, 30 Malay children from Rumah Amal Cahaya Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (RACTAR) joined in the Chinese New Year festive cheer when they were brought by 10 volunteers and caretakers from Great Vision Charity Association (GVCA) to experience some hands-on Chinese traditional arts and watch some live Chinese cultural performances at the Sunway University Year of the Monkey King Chinese New Year Festival.

The children were mesmerised with the Chinese cultural performances that were lined up for the night, which includes Lion Dance, Dragon Dance, 24 Seasons Drum, and Chinese Orchestra, all of which were performed by a group of Sunway University students. The performances were new, unique, and exciting to most of the children, whom were only exposed to lion dance performances prior to this and never knew the existence of the other performances.

Volunteers then brought the children to try their hands at Chinese calligraphy and Chinese paper cutting at booths setup in conjunction with the festival. The children were thrilled at being given the chance to write their names using Chinese brush for the first time, and learning to cut out a paper star with just a single cut on a folded paper. Volunteers also explained to the children some origin story of the Chinese New Year festival and the history of lion dance.

As per usual on any Chinese New Year occasions, angpau packets were distributed to each of the children by Secretary of GVCA, Mr Yuen. The children were also handed with some pocket money to shop for goodies at the various booths selling snacks and trinkets.

“I didn’t know that there is such a thing as Dragon Dance and this is my first time watching it. I am truly amazed at the intricate dance movements and choreography that the group of dancers are able to come out with. I am also happy to get to know a little bit more on Chinese culture especially about the Chinese New Year festival,” commented an excited 11-years old Puteri Nurul, who were one of the children attending the event.

Meanwhile, Secretary of GVCA, Mr Yuen commented that they had always encourage learning about each other’s cultural uniqueness and celebrating each other’s festivals together as Malaysian are living in a multi-cultural society. He felt glad that the children enjoyed themselves in the event while able to bring back some sweet memories about Chinese cultural arts and performances. The group then had a photography session with the 24 Seasons Drum performers before returning home joyfully.
