It’s January, which means school is back for the year! While this might make a lot of kids nationwide roll their eyes, the 64 children from Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Darul Ehsan Malaysia (PKAYDEM) were able to walk into school confidently with brand new school supplies which were supplied to them by Great Vision last month.
The children in the home, whose ages ranged from kindergarten all the way to secondary school, were given supplies based on their level of study. While younger kids were given smaller bags and colour pencils, high schoolers were given graph paper and a dictionary to help with their studies.
Of course, it wasn’t just a handover! We began our event for the day, dubbed Back to School, with a few ice breakers where kids got to move fast and think faster. They were split into groups which were supervised by Great Vision volunteers, who might have had more fun than the kids.
“The programme was a good initiative. I’ve learnt how to communicate with the kids, as well as how to approach people in different ways. The best part was to see their precious smiles when they received the supplies from us. They truly deserved it!” said Yi Ping, one of our volunteers for the day.
To add to the fun, the kids were greeted by Chicky, the official mascot of KFC who lead the chicken dance with the excited group, while KFC staff played more games with the children and gave out stuffed Chicky toys to the winners. For lunch, the children were treated to a yummy KFC meal too!
The smiles on the children’s faces were enough reward for all the work put in by us here at Great Vision. We are honoured to have played a role in the academic success of these young lives!
